A C₃ axis denotes a rotation axis which when viewed along the axis, shows the bond angle at 120° (360°/3 = 120°). E.g. CH₄ has 4C₃ axes. Looking down any C-H bond will show a C₃ axis, so the principle axis could be determined as any one of these.
